We all have great ideas for our gardens this year.

So what are your plans?  A completely new look or more colour, or even a larger space for growing your own?  Whatever you plan to do, we can inspire you to make the most of your outdoor space.

The weather may not be kind to us in January but you can still enjoy the fresh air by plotting your new schemes.  If you want a change in certain areas, now is the time to identify where you would like to improve your borders, for example, or choose which vegetables you want to grow.  That’s an easy one – start with your favourites!

Petunia Phantom

So, for vibrant colour in your flower borders, why not plan your display now?  With seeds and bulbs to choose from, you can begin to prepare now.  What could be more satisfying than nurturing your seeds to established planted groups of colour?  Choose a mixture of colours and heights for the best displays.  Did you try any of our new varieties of plants last year?  If so, we would love to hear from you – how did you get on?  We introduced Petunia Phantom which proved very popular and this year we are going to add to our range with Starflame Primroses available from mid February and a new range of Nemesia Michelle Pink and Myrtle Blue from April.

Sweet Peas are an old favourite of here at Poplar Tree Garden Centre. You can’t beat the colours or fragrance of the Sweet Pea.  Try ‘Prima Ballerina’ for gentle shades of pink, mauve and cream with each stem producing an average of four blooms so perfect for cutting and bringing indoors.

Watch out for our new seedlings which will arrive at the Garden Centre from mid February so if you want to cut out the first stage of encouraging seedlings from seeds, this is the option for you.  Make sure you use a recommended compost from our growing area which will give your seedlings the best start possible.

Don’t forget to protect your pots and containers for another couple of months by placing them close to the house or a sheltered wall.  And that all important fleece will still come in handy so make sure you have plenty ready for those frosty nights.

As you know, your lawn is the pinnacle of a beautiful garden and to ensure it stays in peak condition through the colder, slow growing months, you should have given it a good autumn feed.  Add a reminder to your 2012 calendar now that your lawn will need a feed in March to give it a boost before spring arrives.

And finally, encourage more birds to your garden by keeping your bird feeding station kits, feeders, trays and bird baths topped up with fresh food and water.  Make sure the water does not freeze over!

Harry Potter Fever hits the UK

As the release of Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows hits the UK cinema screens, interest, as always, soars into the history behind the filming locations of the various Harry Potter Films.

The first two Harry Potter movies were filmed in Durham Cathedral to a large extent, and since the launch of the Harry Potter franchise, millions of people have flocked to Durham to visit the historic city and Durham Cathedral which was used as the location of Hogwarts School for Witchcraft and Wizardry.

durham cathedral harry potterThe Cloisters in Durham Cathedral were the main filming locations for Harry Potter and Harry, Ron and their friends and classmates cam be seen in the cloisters and many other rooms in the Cathedral which were used as classromms at Hogwarts.

Durham Cathedral, near Durham University, was used in the first two Harry Potter films for both interior and exterior views of Hogwarts. The cathedral’s chapter house was also used for the scenes in McGonagall's classroom.

We are very proud of the fact that Durham City was chosen as the Filming Location of Harry Potter and we often get tourists into Poplar Tree Garden Centre who have travelled to Durham just to surround themselves in Hogwarts. Im sure now that Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows has hit our screens that the influx of tourists will again be present, and of course we welcome them with open arms and a true North East welcome. Durham is also a good starting point to head on a little further up the coast to Alnwick where you can see the place where Harry Potter was given his first Broomstick lesson.

Gardens should prepare for a cold winter according to Alan Titchmarsh

alan titchmarshThose hoping for a colourful display in their gardens next year should be planning for a harsh winter ahead, according to TV personality Alan Titchmarsh.

Writing for the Daily Express, the former Gardener's World presenter said with our climate becoming less predictable, it was possible that temperatures could drop to below -10 degrees C in some parts of the UK.

Mr Titchmarsh explained this means picking plants that can survive the cold will be vital to people looking to keep their borders in bloom.

However, he also remarked "choosing hardier plants is only half the battle" and recommended tweaking other techniques to ensure all areas are well sheltered.

Using garden products such as mulch over flowerbeds and keeping rocky features topped up should give protection from the worst of the weather, he added.

Mr Titchmarsh reassured gardeners that as long as they took "sensible precautions", most plants should be able to come through the winter "relatively unscathed".

Poplar Tree Garden Centre Continue Support of Future Business Magnates Durham

Paul Curry Poplar Tree Garden CentreFor the second year running, Poplar Tree Garden Centre (with the support of Brambledown) are offering business partnering to a school in the 2010 Future Business Magnates run by Durham County Council. This year, Paul Curry who is Business Development Manager at Brambledown and Poplar Tree Garden Centre attends regular meetings with Durham Federation (a federation between Fyndoune Community College & Durham Community Business College) in preperation for their monthly challenges throughout the year. Each school must develop a business idea and go through the process of devising a product, sourcing finance and marketing and selling their product by proposing a business model. Last year Paul Curry offered Business partnering to Easington Community College as they finished high up the league table.

Future Business Magnates is a fun competition with an important business message and opportunity. Now in its fifth year, the initiative was originally designed for year 8 students from the Durham City area. However, such has been the success of the scheme that schools throughout County Durham are now competing and this year the number of entrants has risen to sixteen.

Launched in 2005 by the late and much loved Sir Bobby Robson, Future Business Magnates continues to assist schools to deliver the enterprise, creativity and key skills set down under the education agenda at local, regional and national levels.

The competition provides an outlet for schools to encourage entrepreneurial attainment and to promote social and economic awareness amongst its students.

More information about this wonderful innitiative can be found here.
